Texturing the Main Building

Workflow

This project has to be delivered in 4K resolution and there were some shots that revealed the texture of the building up close. So I created the whole texture of the building procedurally inside 3ds Max. That  made texture more sharp and easy to manipulate.

Modeling and Texturing the Road and the Sidewalk

Workflow

Final Scene Assembly was done inside Maya. Modeling and positioning of the road and sidewalk was done inside 3ds max and exported to Maya using FBX. Correct scene scale in both software played a vital part in this process.

Texturing the Road and the Sidewalk

I had the creative freedom of deciding the look of the Road and Sidewalk. But it comes with a risk that client may request a complete change in the look of the assets. Specially with the texture. So, a small maxscript was used to randomize the materials of the blocks of the sidewalk. This way, I got the flexibility of adding, removing a material from sidewalk blocks and even changing the whole look of the sidewalk with few clicks. Road was also textured with procedural techniques; blending maps together. It also uses a displacement map also created procedurally.

You can download the maxscript snippet that will apply materials randomly from a selected material set in material editor to selected object set on the scene. Just select the objects that you need random materials applied to and then select the set of materials you want to apply randomly from the material editor and run the script.

Modeling and Texturing the trees

Workflow

Trees were modeled using Speed Tree Cinema. And textured inside 3ds Max.

Animating the Vehicles

Workflow

Vehicles were animated inside 3ds Max using noise controllers and basic vehicle rigging. Noise controllers were used to simulate the suspension of the vehicles.

Compositing

Workflow

Composition of the shot was done inside Adobe After Effects.
